Two major traditional pain points in the reactive compounding process
1. Stagnant zones and the "ratholing" phenonmenon
Hot melt glue typically exhibit melt-phase viscosities ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of centipoise (cP). When processing such high-viscosity materials, conventional anchor or frame-style agitators merely drive the fluid immediately adjacent to the blades in a circular motion; they fail to induce vertical flow, resulting in significant mixing "dead zones" at the center or bottom of the reactor.
2. Localized overheating and polymer charring
Hot melt glue base materials possess low thermal conductivity and are highly sensitive to temperature. If the material within the reactor does not circulate and refresh rapidly, adhesive adhering to the reactor walls remains exposed to heat for prolonged periods. This makes it highly susceptible to degradation, yellowing, and even charring, which severely compromises the transparency and adhesive strength of the final product.

Advantages of Reactor Ribbon Agitator
1. Large-scale axial circulation to eliminate laminar flow dead zones
The ribbon agitator features a specific helical pitch angle. During rotation, the outer ribbon forcefully drives high-viscosity material upward along the vessel wall, while the inner ribbon or central structure guides the material to flow back downward. This dual-directional, large-scale axial circulation enables efficient three-dimensional mixing of the entire batch, completely eliminating flow discontinuities.
2. Wall-scraping heat transfer to prevent yellowing and charring
A minimal clearance is maintained between the outer edge of the ribbon and the inner wall of the reactor. As it rotates, the outer ribbon continuously scrapes the film of high-viscosity material from the wall, rapidly transporting heated material toward the center while pushing cooler material from the center toward the wall. This efficient heat transfer mechanism effectively minimizes the temperature gradient at the wall, preventing localized overheating.
3. Gentle shear to suppress "shaft climbing" and air entrapment
Polymer melts are prone to "shaft climbing" (wrapping around the shaft) when subjected to high-speed shear. The ribbon agitator offers a large surface area and uniform driving force, effectively balancing fluid shear stresses. Furthermore, its relatively gentle flow field avoids whipping large amounts of air into the viscous mass—unlike high-speed dispersion discs—thereby significantly easing the burden on the subsequent vacuum degassing process.
4. Assisted high-pressure discharge to minimize residual loss
Discharging high-viscosity material after the reaction is complete is often a time-consuming process. By controlling the rotation direction of the ribbon agitator, the helical driving force acts like a screw extruder, continuously pushing the material toward the discharge outlet at the vessel bottom; this significantly increases discharge speed and minimizes material residue inside the reactor.
